Experimental Drawing Workshop

Programme manager Ian Andrews delivered the regular experimental drawing workshop "Project in a night." This year it attracted a record number of participants with over 30 students volunteering for a two-hour evening session. As in previous workshops the emphasis was on the development of ideas under extreme time pressure.

OUTLINE encourages all students to participate and a wide range of different levels attended from first year subsidiary diploma, AS/A2 art to HND Fine art. These workshops create a space/arena in which students can operate outside the criteria of normal projects, where anything can happen and  experimental discoveries can be made.

Theatre Design Workshop with Saranjit Birdi.

OUTLINE students on the Theatre Arts Course and BMAPA  drama students worked together with visiting artist and theatre designer Saranjit Birdi following his FEED night talk outlining his varied career in architecture, computer animation, community arts and recent performance pieces creating a fusion between drawing and dance.

The students worked in groups to develop ideas for the collaborative live project, BMAPA’s production of “The Little Match Girl” considering points raised in Saranjit’s  talk and solutions to staging problems, for example how to light a match without using a real flame!

“FEED” Evening with visiting artist Saranjit Birdi.

OUTLINE welcomed  former student Saranjit Birdi to the first FEED evening of 2013/2014. Saranjit spoke about his varied practice as an Architect, Choreographer, Theatre Designer and his work on Public Art Commissions.  His fusion of drawing and dance was of particular interest to the OUTLINE initiative.

At the end of his talk he demonstrated his drawing abilities with different parts of his anatomy! Making a portrait of Programme Manager Ian Andrews in 10 minutes using his feet!

Then it was “socks off” for those  willing to have a go themselves!

This entry shows a project run with the Harborne Academy where year seven students studying on the theme of the history of Birmingham turned photographs they had taken in the Jewellery Quarter into large-scale, experimental, mixed media drawings.

Yellow Week - January 2013

The recent yellow week was our first themed event related to the development of the new overseas exchange programme “Comenius”. The project theme of “gastronomy” was taken up by our students from the Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design in the development of drawings, sculptures and Prints looking at the forms and structures of fruits and vegetables. Above you can see a short film which captures the week-long activities. 

Yellow Week 2 - Comenius inspired activity

During the second yellow week the current group of Subsidiary Diploma students are producing work inspired by the theme of the Comenius exchange programme, which is 'food'. Over the next two years students from the department will have the opportunity to visit different countries and cities, with the aim to meet students and to sample the local cuisine. 

Today the students are working in three different groups. Each group is working on a set activity for either a morning or afternoon, before switching over to the next activity. The activities on offer are a large scale drawing, which encourages the students to work large-scale across walls and floors. A sculptural outcome, which encourages students to use wire to create a three-dimensional response. And a relief printing workshop, which requires of the students to first build and then print their own large-scale printing plate, which is made from paper and other found materials.

On Thursday all work produced during the yellow week activities will be showcase in a final exhibition, which will be held at Outline, Sutton Coldfield.

Comenuis exchange programme

Last week students from colleges in Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Turkey, Latvia and Bulgaria visited Outline. The group of students was working on a large scale mural inspired by their local surroundings. Find out more about the exchange programme here:

This is a time-lapse recording of the experimental drawing workshop, which took place last Thursday evening at Outline.

Last night a selection of our art and design students worked alongside a group of students that are currently visiting the college as part of six-week exchange programme between BMetC and SUPS college in Prague. Together the students worked on large-scale life drawings on all surfaces but the celling. Amazing how some of the drawings are stretching across the different surface of wall and floor and simultaneously break down conventional perceptions of where the wall ends and the floor begins, beautiful!
