POP-UP exhibitions

The student work produced in the recent Millennium Point Drawing Event was exhibited by Programme Manager Ian Andrews at the Outline Drawing Centre during the week of 17^th of October .

The exhibition was one of a series of “pop-up” exhibitions that Outline organises to encourage the students to see their work in a professional setting, where away from the clutter of production a true picture emerges of the quality of the work. The students involved were provided with photographs taken during the event itself and photographs of their work in the exhibition providing valuable evidence for their degree application portfolios.

“Project in a night”

The Event also gave visitors to the Open Event a chance to join in and make some drawings themselves. The main purpose of the event, led by programme manager Ian Andrews, was to show students and visitors not only how to improve their basic drawing skills but also to demonstrate how drawing can be used as a medium for the development of ideas.

The students were asked to produce five A1 drawings starting from observation but which showed certain qualities/visual characteristics/ideas being emphasised and expressed across the sequence of work produced. The pressure was on because the workshop was only 2 hours long and the participants responded wonderfully to the pressure and an amazing number of quality drawings were produced which did indeed show the development of ideas across the sequence of studies.

1st Year Subsidiary Diploma In Art & Design

The 1st year Art & Design Students have just started their botanical form projects. These current examples were produced within a 2 hour visual studies lesson. The students examined the shape, form and structure of leave forms collected from Sutton Park and produced large scale graphite drawings and ink wash mixed media paintings. Next session, the students will examine their botanical findings through binocular microscopes and produce intensly detailed studies of the internal structure of various forms.

2nd Year suitcase Project

A couple of examples of the latest work being produced within the 2nd year visual studies. The students brought in suitcases with a collection of personal objects. Later the students explore the potential of their objects through a series of large scale mixed media work extending the drawing and ideas as they unpack their suitcases. These narrative pieces of work help the students think more intensively about what these objects mean to them and nurture a more independent and conceptual way of thinking. The suitcase project will link in to the next project after half term whereby the students will look at an autobiographical theme and produce a range of outcomes specific to their chosen specialism. 2nd year Visual Studies

This is the current selection of work being produced by 2nd year Art & design Students within Visual Studies. The students have been intensively drawing for 3 hour sessions to produce outcomes for portfolio. These particular set of drawings focused heavily on the tonal properties of still life objects and were patiently built up with a series of continous mark making to interpret the shape and form of the objects. Students used no line to create these drawings only tone.

Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design Yellow Day 1

To kick start the Yellow Week project Art students joined Sports students in creating images based upon the London 2012 Olympics that will later be developed to create promotional material for the Sports Department.

Level 2 Art and Design Botanical Gardens Visit

As part of the 4 week induction project, Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design students were taken on a visit to the Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston to gather primary research.

Millennium Point Drawing event

A selected group of students from the Outline Drawing Centre, based at Sutton Coldfield, worked down in the centre of Birmingham at the Fashion Lab Studios. These external events are a way of spreading the outline ethos across Birmingham.

The students Alexandra Parry, Lilith Dhillon Parkin, Usman Javed and Anthony White worked on a sequence of large drawings based on images of our performing arts students.

This was one of a series of workshops and events planned for this year, the next one takes place during our open evening on Thursday, 13th October. Where a group of students will be involved in a workshop called "Project in a Night", where students produce a sequence of drawings developing an idea in an extremely short space of time.

"Who are you?" - Induction weeks project

Expressive Self-portraits; the group of illustration students was asked to express an emotion using several illustrative ways to emphasis the expression visually.
